On the 28th of June 2024, in Cape Town, South Africa, a 12-year-old swimmer named Jamie Els has embarked on a remarkable challenge. Despite her young age, Jamie is determined to make a difference by swimming 110kms in just 10 days to raise funds for South African Para Swimmers. This courageous initiative was sparked by Jamie’s realization that differently abled swimmers face higher essential costs that could hinder their dreams of competing in swimming or the Olympics. Her own dream of going to the Olympics has inspired her to support others in achieving the same opportunity.
At Bergvliet Primary School, Jamie’s challenge has not only warmed the hearts of her community but also made her school immensely proud. Her initiative embodies the spirit of community and the power of youth-led action. Jamie aims not only to complete the swim but also to inspire others and gather support for a worthy cause. Through a crowdfunding campaign, she has already raised over R10,000 in just eight days. Her determination and compassion are truly admirable.
In addition to Jamie’s incredible feat, another young hero, 11-year-old Kenzie Knott, is currently tackling the 13 Peaks Challenge to support orphaned baby rhinos. These young individuals are shining examples of selflessness and determination, making a positive impact in their communities and beyond.
